Nantucket’s Famous Pumpkin Soup

June 27, 2011

One of the cafés in Fremantle was called the Merchant and the menu was composed as if a traveler picked a dish or 2 from every region of the world to that he visited. The 2 references to the US were a BLT named after the Hudson River (huh?), and this Pumpkin and Nutmeg soup from Nantucket. While it’s safe to assume Nantucket restaurants have truly served pumpkin soup, I thought it was so funny that half a world away this was the dish chosen to represent my home state. Not chowder, seafood rolls, crème-filled donuts, or baked beans, but pumpkin soup.
