Coffee Down Under

July 7, 2011

Coffee consumption is Australia is very different from the US. There is no drip coffee, just a variety of espresso drinks, and they are never iced.  I knew this going in, so I was confused and excited when I saw iced coffee on a few café menus. It turns out in Australia, iced coffee = ice + coffee does not exist, but instead iced coffee = ice cream + espresso + milk. Not the kind of drink I want to start my morning with.  There is also a milk + espresso drink called a flat white.  Kimbra worked in a café while in Perth and after an entire semester study concluded there is no difference between a flat white and a latte (but they are always listed as different items on menus). In case you are in Australia and need a caffeine fix I’ve created this handy guide:

Flat White = espresso + steamed milk that is not hot enough + 1mm foam

Latte = espresso + steamed milk that is not hot enough + 2mm foam

Cappuccino = espresso + steamed milk that is not hot enough + 3mm foam + cocoa powder

Short black = espresso shot

Long black = espresso shot + hot water (an Americano)

Iced coffee = dessert

It makes you miss the endless mugs of coffee like whoa. One upside to coffee in Australia? There’s a brand named after me :). Molto buono!
